Europol supports international operation resulting in the rescue of an underage sex abuse victim

Europol has teamed up with the Romanian Directorate for Investigating Crimes of Organized Criminality and Terrorism, as well as law enforcement authorities in Italy and the UK in a joint investigation to arrest a Romanian woman suspected of producing child abuse material.  As a result, the woman, aged 27, has been ordered to be detained by prosecutors from the Directorate on reasonable suspicion of offences including production of child sexual abuse material and rape. The alleged offences, including multiple explicit sexual acts, are believed to have taken place between February and August 2016.  The victim, her daughter, is said by investigators to have been taken advantage of when she could not defend herself. On these occasions, the suspect is accused of abusing her daughter in order to produce child sexual abuse and exploitation material. Those materials were then allegedly sent via an online communication application for further distribution through social media networks. The investigation in Romania was carried out together with judicial police officers within the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and supported by the Organized Crime Brigade Bacau with specialised support from the Directorate of Special Operations. The Romanian Prosecutor’s Office in their press release stressed that throughout the criminal proceedings, suspects and defendants have the rights and procedural guarantees provided by the Code of Criminal Procedure and the presumption of innocence.
