Kaku Kamagai, come descriveresti il tuo percorso personale e cosa ti ha ispirato a intraprendere una carriera nella moda?
Kaku Kamagai, how would you describe your personal journey, and what inspired you to pursue a career in modeling?
Fino ad ora ho costruito la mia carriera esprimendomi attraverso la danza. Creare una performance sul palco richiede anni di dedizione e impegno, e sono sempre stata profondamente toccata dal modo in cui la passione di creativi e performer può trasmettere un momento di emozione al pubblico. Stare sul palco ed esprimermi mi ha sempre dato una profonda sensazione di felicità.

Il motivo per cui ho deciso di dedicarmi alla modellazione in passerella è stato un sentimento molto sincero: volevo salire su un tipo diverso di palco. Inoltre, amo davvero la moda. Come danzatrice, i costumi sono una parte essenziale della narrazione e della performance, e sono sempre stati uno degli aspetti che preferisco di più.
Grazie a quella passione, sono diventata curiosa sul funzionamento dell’industria della moda, che mi ha portato a intraprendere la carriera da modella.
Until now, I have built my career through expressing myself through dance. Creating a stage performance requires many years of dedication and effort, and I have always been deeply moved by how the passion of creators and performers can deliver a moment of emotion to the audience. Standing on stage and expressing myself has always given me a profound sense of happiness.
The reason I decided to pursue runway modeling was a very honest feeling — I wanted to stand on a different kind of stage. And also because I truly love fashion. As a dancer, costumes are an essential part of storytelling and performance, and they have always been one of the aspects I enjoy the most. Through that passion, I became curious about how the fashion industry works, which eventually led me to pursue modeling.

Sei stata una delle protagoniste della GX Fashion Week a Milano. Com’era l’atmosfera in passerella e cosa ha reso quest’esperienza diversa dalle altre settimane della moda internazionali per Kaku Kamagai?
Kaku Kamagai, you were one of the protagonists of the GX Fashion Week in Milan. What was the atmosphere like on the runway, and what made this experience different from other international fashion weeks?
L’atmosfera alla GX Fashion Week è stata incredibilmente emozionante. Si percepiva davvero che i designer, lo staff di produzione, il team tecnico e tutte le modelle fossero uniti e completamente concentrati nel dare vita allo show.
Ogni designer ha presentato una collezione piena del proprio spirito e della propria visione, e far parte di quell’energia condivisa ha reso l’esperienza molto speciale.
The atmosphere at GX Fashion Week was incredibly moving. You could truly feel that the designers, the production staff, the technical team, and all the models were united and fully focused on bringing the show to life.
Each designer presented a collection filled with their own spirit and vision, and being part of that shared energy made the experience very special.

Il tuo look durante lo show ha attirato molta attenzione. Come hai collaborato con il team creativo per interpretare lo stile della collezione?
Your look during the show drew a lot of attention. How did you work with the creative team to interpret the style of the collection?
Il mio look questa volta era un pantaloni molto cool con giacca. La designer, Kurumi, mi ha dato l’indicazione di incarnare una donna con un’aura forte e nobile, qualcuno la cui presenza attira naturalmente l’attenzione.
Sulla base di quel concetto, ho lavorato sull’adattamento della velocità del mio passo e su come presentare la giacca mentre sfilavo in passerella, in modo che il carattere e l’atteggiamento del look potessero essere espressi chiaramente durante lo show.
My look this time was a very cool pants suit. The designer, Kurumi, gave me the direction to embody a woman with a strong and noble aura — someone whose presence naturally draws attention.
Based on that concept, I worked on adjusting the speed of my walk and how I presented the jacket while walking the runway, so that the character and attitude of the look could be expressed clearly during the show.

Negli ultimi mesi hai partecipato a diversi servizi fotografici molto apprezzati. Quale è stato il più significativo per te e perché?
In recent months, you’ve taken part in several highly appreciated photo shoots. Which one has been the most meaningful to you, and why
Tutti i servizi fotografici sono state esperienze molto piacevoli. Per me, la parte più significativa del processo è discutere e affinare il concetto e il tema insieme al team creativo.
Quando tutti collaborano per costruire una visione condivisa, credo che ci permetta di creare immagini che portano un significato più forte.
All of the photo shoots have been very enjoyable experiences. For me, the most meaningful part of the process is discussing and refining the concept and theme together with the creative team.
When everyone collaborates to build a shared vision, I believe it allows us to create images that carry a stronger meaning.
La moda è un’industria competitiva e in continua evoluzione. Quali sono le sfide più grandi che affronti come modella asiatica nel mercato europeo?
Fashion is a competitive and constantly evolving industry. What are the biggest challenges you face as an Asian model in the European market?
Per me, le principali sfide sono la mia altezza e la mia età. Quando sono entrata per la prima volta nel mercato europeo, sono stata onestamente sorpresa da quanto siano alte la maggior parte delle modelle. Tuttavia, poiché sono cose che non posso cambiare, mi concentro su ciò che posso controllare.
Questo significa perfezionare la mia postura e la mia presenza fisica, e anche utilizzare l’esperienza e la carriera che ho costruito nel corso degli anni per esprimere qualcosa di unico e memorabile in un momento molto breve.
For me, the main challenges are my height and my age. When I first entered the European market, I was honestly surprised by how tall most models are. However, since these are things I cannot change, I focus on what I can control.
That means refining my posture and physical presence, and also using the experience and career I have built over the years to express something unique and memorable in a very short moment.

Guardando al futuro, quali sono i tuoi obiettivi? C’è un progetto, una campagna, una sfilata in passerella o un brand con cui sogni di lavorare?
Looking ahead, what are your goals? Is there a project — a campaign, a runway show, or a brand — that you dream of working with?
Il mio obiettivo è espandere il mio lavoro non solo in Europa, ma anche a livello internazionale e in Giappone, sia come modella che come direttrice del movimento e coreografa.
Sono particolarmente interessata a progetti in cui la moda si interseca con la performance e l’installazione artistica.
Show come quelli di Maison Margiela o Alexander McQueen, dove la moda si fonde con l’espressione teatrale e artistica, sono ambienti in cui adorerei essere coinvolta.
Al tempo stesso, provo un forte senso di orgoglio per i gesti unici, l’estetica e le tradizioni caratteristiche della cultura giapponese.
Attraverso il mio lavoro, spero di condividere la bellezza e lo spirito del Giappone con il pubblico di tutto il mondo. Vedo la passerella come un’altra forma di performance, dove il movimento e la moda si incontrano per creare un momento di espressione.
My goal is to expand my work not only in Europe but also internationally and in Japan, both as a model and as a movement director and choreographer. I am especially interested in projects where fashion intersects with performance and artistic installation.
Shows like those by Maison Margiela or Alexander McQueen, where fashion merges with theatrical and artistic expression, are environments I would love to be involved in.
At the same time, I also feel a strong sense of pride in the unique gestures, aesthetics, and traditions that are characteristic of Japanese culture. Through my work, I hope to share the beauty and spirit of Japan with audiences around the world. I see the runway as another form of performance, where movement and fashion meet to create a moment of expression.
