English version

DJ and music producer, Valeria Ostina is a young Ukrainian artist from Odesa who is steadily building her path within the electronic music scene. From a teenage passion for techno to her first steps as a producer, she now looks to the future with ambition and creativity. In this interview, she tells us about her roots, her love for music, and her artistic goals for the years ahead.

Welcome, Valeria. To begin with, how much have Odesa and your connection with the Black Sea influenced your identity and artistic sensibility?

I am deeply connected to my roots and to my homeland, which has always been an endless source of inspiration for me. Whenever I needed to find a space for myself and my creativity, all I had to do was leave home, get on my bicycle, and ride to the beach to breathe in the sea air.

The Black Sea is my sea, and it remains one of the most profound symbols of my childhood. I believe that each of us carries a special bond with the places where we grew up, and for me, that bond will always have the scent and sound of the sea in Odesa. It is a place where I feel I truly belong, even when life takes me far away.

Growing up in a large family, you developed many interests, including painting, sports, singing, and dancing, before graduating in Languages in 2022. How do these experiences connect with your work in music?

I am the second of four children. I have two sisters and a younger brother, and my family has always been one of the most important pillars of my life.

From a very young age, I had many interests. I love painting, playing sports, singing, and creating choreographies. At the same time, however, I have always tried to balance my passions with my responsibilities. Following my parents’ advice, I graduated in Languages from the University of Odesa in 2022.

During my university years, in between exam sessions, I also traveled to Italy to work as a model. They were all different experiences, but the passion that ultimately became the center of my artistic life was music.

Your passion for techno goes back a long way and has strong family roots. What role did your father play in introducing you to the underground culture of the 1990s?

My father played a fundamental role. I grew up listening to 1990s techno through his passion for this music. When he was in his early twenties, those rhythms accompanied his youth and, many years later, they became part of my life as well.

Through him, I discovered an underground universe that, in my opinion, never truly disappeared. It evolved, remained somehow suspended in time, and continues to be reborn today through both established and emerging artists, new forms, and new languages.

Although I was born in 2001, by the age of nine I was already listening to electronic music that had been produced many years before I was born. One of my most vivid memories is listening to Universe of Love in the car with my father and dancing while letting myself be completely carried away by the music.

I spent countless hours listening to tracks that were created before I even existed, and I believe that experience played a very important role in shaping my artistic journey.

At a certain point, you moved from being a listener to performing at parties in your city. When did you realize that DJing was your true calling?

At a certain point, I realized that simply listening to music was no longer enough. I wanted to immerse myself in it, not only as a listener but as an active participant.

That was when I began approaching DJing and performing at parties. It marked the beginning of a journey that gradually transformed a personal passion into a genuine artistic pursuit.

I love many different musical genres and have deep respect for anyone who can transform an idea or an emotion into music. However, it is electronic music that truly feels like home to me. What fascinates me the most is the possibility of creating sounds through technology that do not exist in nature, building atmospheres and frequencies capable of engaging both the mind and the body at the same time.

In 2024, you took the leap into music production. What inspired you to start creating your own tracks?

It all began with curiosity and with the desire to turn into reality the ideas that started emerging during my DJ sets. While playing tracks by other artists, I would begin imagining variations, new elements, different sounds, and alternative developments. In my mind, I could hear something that did not yet exist within the track I was playing.

That feeling sparked my desire to learn music production. I started by experimenting, reinterpreting tracks that had particularly inspired me, and gradually searching for my own sonic language. Production became a natural extension of DJing and, above all, a tool through which I can express emotions, images, and ideas in an increasingly personal way.

In May 2026, your single High was released. Is this the beginning of a new chapter? What lies ahead for Valeria Ostina?

High represents only the first step in an artistic vision that is constantly evolving. I already have several new tracks ready and many more waiting to be completed. Every day brings a moment capable of sparking an idea. It can be the chorus of a commercial in my native language, the sound of a car door closing, or a piece of metal falling onto the floor. Sometimes, all it takes is an apparently insignificant sound for it to begin transforming in my mind, first into a rhythm and then into music. One of the things I love most about this profession is never knowing where the next source of inspiration will come from or where it will lead me. What I do know is that I am ready to follow this dream wherever it may take me, even to the other side of the world.
